Portfolio Preparation for Specialized Art High Schools.

For students in seventh and eighth grades who plan to apply to specialized art high schools, we provide a special portfolio preparation class. Drawing, painting and design assignments will also prepare students for auditions to these high schools. Bridgeview School has a successful track record with portfolio preparation. Almost all of our students who applied to the LaGuardia School of Arts were accepted into its program.

Art College Portfolio Preparation. Drawing, Painting, Sculpture (sculpture is optional if time permits).

Over the years, Bridgeview students have been accepted into the best BFA and MFA programs in the country including California Art Institute, FIT, Parsons, RISDI, SVA, Pratt, Boston Art Institute, New York Academy of Art, Repin Academy of Art in Russia and other major art programs throughout the world. Most received general and some received full scholarships.

Drawing on this experience and hearing from what our alumni had to say when they presented their Bridgeview portfolios, we have come up with an even better program to help you get into the school of your choice.

As it was stated in New York Times article "Portfolio Prep" where Bridgeview program was mentioned as one of the best around the country "An acceptable portfolio generally contains 15 to 20 drawings, paintings, collages, small three-dimensional works ...“What I need to see are observational drawings from life,” Ms. Morgan, admissions counselor at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia says - “a range of drawings and other media that show me the depth and range of a student’s talents.”

During this 12 weeks course which ideally should be continued by a student through more than one semester, students will divide their time between drawing, painting and possibly sculpting (if time allows). Each class will include a short art history lecture as it relates to the specific assignments.

We are offering this course as a twice a week or once a week option, of course twice a week would produce a better portfolio, but we understand the time constraints many high school students face.

We are honored to have Tatiana Zhurkov to teach this class. Tatiana is an internationally known major contemporary artist, who received her classical education in Russia, but established a highly successful art career in the United States. Her work is included in the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, the Hillwood Museum in Washington DC and other major museums and collections around the world.

Still Life and Landscape Painting for ages 9 - 17. Scholarship for this class is provided by Steven and Elena Heinz Foundation.

This class is for students who show more than average talent in drawing or painting. Students need to have a trial class before signing up. After one semester of successful studies, students will be offered a full scholarship for this class. To see work done in that class visit http://www.academicart.com/galina.htm

This class is taught by Galina Dubinskaya, a classically-trained painter with 30 years of teaching experience in Russia, Israel and America. Galina Dubinskaya graduated from the Stroganov Institute of Art and Design in Moscow. At a young age, she was chosen by the Russian government to be a chief designer for decorative murals and frescoes for the city of Moscow. She has developed a unique program for children that is based on the art of the impressionists and post-impressionists. Many of her students have become professional artists or art teachers. Some even sold their work at an early age. Students showing sufficient progress after one semester are offered a scholarship.

Thursday 6 - 8 p.m.

$390 (materials are not included for this class). Parents need to purchase about $100 worth of materials, however for most students these materials last for at least two semesters.

Materials. Bridgeview supplies all of the materials (except for college portfolio class). Bridgeview students work with the highest quality professional grade drawing and painting supplies. We are very generous with our materials. If parents were to buy the equivalent of what their kids use at Bridgeview, they'd spend over $100 per semester. They cost us less because we buy in bulk, but art supplies are still expensive. We ask you to speak to your child so they treat materials with respect. For children of 12 years and older we do not provide brushes, because brushes are delicate and they have to be thoroughly washed by students after each class. Please ask instructor to show you what brushes to get for your child.

Withdrawal policy. Students can withdraw before the first day of class by notifying the school by telephone, e-mail or in person. Full refund will be provided. Students can withdraw after the first day of class, in which case they lose 1/3 of tuition. Also, Bridgeview has the right to expel children who are disruptive to the class. In such case, we will return the unused portion of tuition minus $50 fee.

Attention! We allow a payment schedule consisting of two payments, one payable with registration and another 30 days later. However, payments must be secured with a major credit card. If the second payment is not received on time, we will charge it to your credit card.

Trial Classes For new students we offer one trial class for a $40 fee. However, a trial class has to be taken towards the middle or end of the previous semester. For example, if you want to register for the fall, you'd have to take a trial class at the end of the summer session. Since the beginning of each semester is extremely busy for us, we don't allow trial classes until later. Exceptions are made if a group of your choice is not operating at full capacity.

Bridgeview teaching philosophy is individual approach in a group setting. Therefore, our groups are very small. For children of age 7 - 9, the groups can't be larger than 7 students. For ages 9 - 17, the maximum group size is 9 kids. Therefore, by registering your child for one semester, you reserve his space in class. We usually have a waiting list, so we urge you to register early.
