Composition in Sculpture

Preparatory relief sketch in clay by E. Lanteri   Preparatory relief sketch in clay by E. Lanteri

Learning to draw and sculpt from life is very important. However, it is not enough to make one a true artist, a creator. It is the study of Composition that helps one to become an artist, someone capable of a unique personal interpretation of nature and life. The laws of Composition make up the language of creativity.

Students will learn the process of designing and executing typical sculpture commissions. They will complete a great number of assignments, based on a given or chosen topic. Students may be asked to design a commemorative medal, an honorary award, a monument to a public/cultural figure, a playground for children, or a sculpture garden. Figurative compositions on a specific theme such as historical events or human activities may also be assigned.

Work proceeds as follows, but not necessarily in this order:

  • Choice of theme
  • Choice of design and spatial arrangement of objects and characters
  • Building a maquette
  • Research of place (interior or exterior), objects, costumes, decorative attributes
  • Series of drawn and sculpted sketches of the composition and its parts
  • Sculpting the whole composition or a detail
