New class! Art College Portfolio Preparation. Figure Drawing, Clay Sculpture and Collage. Emphasis on skills and creativity.

Over the years, Bridgeview students have been accepted into the best BFA and MFA programs in the country including California Art Institute, FIT, Parsons, RISDI, SVA, Pratt, Boston Art Institute, New York Academy of Art, Repin Academy of Art in Russia. Most received general and some received full scholarships.

Drawing on this experience, we have come up with an even better program to help you get into the school of your choice.

As it was stated in New York Times article "Portfolio Prep" where Bridgeview program was mentioned as one of the best around the country "An acceptable portfolio generally contains 15 to 20 drawings, paintings, collages, small three-dimensional works ...“What I need to see are observational drawings from life,” Ms. Morgan, admissions counselor at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia says - “a range of drawings and other media that show me the depth and range of a student’s talents.”

During this 12 weeks course which ideally should be continued by a student through more than one semester, students will spend roughly one third of their time drawing the human figure and portrait, another third sculpting the human figure in clay (small-scale plastiline figurines) and another third working on a collage. Each class will include a short art history lecture as it relates to the specific assignments.

We are offering this course as a twice a week or once a week option.

We are honored to have Tatiana Zhurkov to teach this class. Tatiana is an internationally known major contemporary artist, who received her classical education in Russia. In 2002 she had a solo show at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Her work is included in the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, the Hillwood Museum in Washington DC. The following www pages are devoted to Tatiana Zhurkov.

DRAWING COURSES

Portrait and Figure Drawing.

Using tone and line students will attempt to approach drawing like it was done by the masters of the Renaissance, Michelangelo and Leonardo. Students will interpret the human figure as a harmonious unity of masses. Students will focus on understanding the inner movement and structure of the human body by learning both construction and anatomy. Students are encouraged to combine both feeling and knowledge when working on composition, proportions and modeling of the forms. Short and long poses will be alternated. Beginners are welcome to take this course, but they will begin drawing from still life before they can progress to a live model. PAINTING COURSES

Academic Painting. Still Life and Portrait.

The Russian tradition in painting has always emphasized color, but not at the expense of drawing. Observing the slightest variations of color temperature and value in light and in shadow, students should search for a harmonious color unity. The Russian tradition also emphasizes the harmonious design of a painting. Details are important to the extent that they contribute to the overall composition, and not just produce photographic likeness. The key to strong painting lies in selective interpretation. By working from life in a variety of genres such as portrait or still life students will master both technical and conceptual aspects of painting. Beginner students work in ala prima technique. More advanced students can incorporate the old master technique of glazing. This course is also perfect for students looking to develop a strong college portfolio.
