Emphasis on Construction
 |
The
type and progression of the drawing exercises
follow the logic of sculptural assignments. This
three-level course emphasizes the constructive
method of drawing, referred to as
"architectonic" by the great French
sculptor Bourdelle. Students will be encouraged
to think about the structure of the object rather
than purely copy light and shade silhouettes.
Therefore, they may be asked to draw the same
object from several different views, turned
upside or on its side, in larger than life-size
scale and even from memory. |

Level 1
Typical
drawing assignments may include:
- still life with organic and
man-made objects
- architectural detail such as
an antique frieze or capital
- Michelangelo's anatomical
parts such as the ear, eye, nose and
mouth
- a human skull from three
different views
- a variety of casts including
portrait busts
- portrait from life from
three different views
