Most of these quick studies were done by Samuel Kudish during his service in the Soviet Army between 1941 and 1948, even before he entered the Academy. They provide an excellent study guide for learning to make quick sketches from life.
When Mr. Kudish asked me to photograph those sketches, there were literally hundreds of them, and unfortunately I could not place all of them online. Here are just a few of them, broken down in the the following categories. Also, note that the size of those sketches is very small, no page was larger than 8 x 11 inches.
